TitleLetter from W T [William Turner] Thiselton-Dyer, Kew, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorDyer; Sir William Turner Thiselton- (1843-1928); British botanist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date19 July 1905
DescriptionHe thanks Larmor for the sight of his paper, and refers him to a paper by [Angelo] Battlli and [Annibale] Stefanini on osmotic pressure. Larmor's explanation of this was chemical rather than physical and his theory is 'extremely pretty'. Thiselton-Dyer doubts whether there is evidence for the 'osmotic gradient'. He has reached the same conclusion as [Wilhelm] Pfeffer that saline bodies diffuse through cell walls. The literature on this subject is enormous and he refers Larmor to a bibliography. He makes various brief points on Jamin chains, hydrostatic pressure, and a paper by Jantzen. He is delighted that Larmor takes an interest in the subject. Botanists are expected to grasp their own vast subject, and be physicists and chemists as well. He will be sorry to see 'more escapades like the recent one from the Cavendish Labiratory'.
