TitleLetter from W T [William Turner] Thiselton-Dyer, The Ferns, Wicombe, Gloucester, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorDyer; Sir William Turner Thiselton- (1843-1928); British botanist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date28 February 1912
DescriptionHe is glad that Larmor referenced the Glen Roy shelves, as he has now been able to clear [Joseph Dalton] Hooker's position. He gives an account of papers around the subject, noting [Charles] Darwin's of 1839, attributing the shelves to marine beaches, which he convinced [Charles] Lyell about; 'they accordingly snubbed Hooker in 1849'. He gives other references. Thiselton-Dyer heard Kelvin read [James] Thomson's posthumous paper on atmospheric circulation, which was 'generally considered rot', but which is now being taken more seriously. He lists and describes three portraits of Joseph Dalton Hooker at different ages; and notes a drawing by Afred Parsons.
