TitleLetter from D'Arcy W [Wentworth] Thompson, International Committee for Investigation of North Sea Scotland), University College, Dundee, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorThompson; Sir D'Arcy Wentworth (1860-1948); British zoologist and classical scholar
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date24 July 1915
DescriptionThompson thinks that the very worst biological papers are published by the Royal Society, giving the example of [Edward] Heron Allen's paper on foraminfera, which he has seen that morning. He asks Larmor to look at p.265 onward on protoplasm, 'the whole argument is a piece of the grossest old-fashioned ignorance!' Biologists who have a little physics have known the phenomenon to be surface tension. Thompson continues his criticism, concluding that it is 'heartbreaking', and 'extremely annoying' to see rubbish printed in the Philosophical Transactions. He has no ill-will towards Heron Allen, who is an industrious amateur, but totally ignorant of the groundwork of science.
