| Title | Letter from D'Arcy W [Wentworth] Thompson, University College, Dundee, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Thompson; Sir D'Arcy Wentworth (1860-1948); British zoologist and classical scholar |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 20 March 1916 |
| Description | In his early boyhood, he spent long holidays in Mr. Drury's household in County Dublin. There were twelve clever sons and any dinner table assertions were met with 'Say, you think'. He has taken the advice to heart, but has omitted this from his book for the sake of brevity, as he will explain in the preface. He does not want to lay down the law, but he wants to wake up his brother biologists. He thanks Larmor for the trouble he has taken with proofs, and Thompson is much better for his criticisms. Thompson has noticed a 'horrid blunder' on slip 30. He refers to a paper in the Annals of Botany on the rate of growth of the pea [by Isabella Leitch], which dissents from Van't Hoff's law. Thompson has suspicions about Bose's book, but thinks there are some right things in it. Larmor's point about heated soil in Norway is a good one. In a postscript, he discusses the rate of growth in maize and temperature. |
