| Title | Letter from Silvanus P [Phillips] Thompson, Morland, Chislett Road, West Hampstead, to Joseph Larmor |
| Creator | Thompson; Silvanus Phillips (1851-1916); physicist and electrical engineer |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 19 December 1901 |
| Description | He sends a receipt for Larmor's cheque and is clear that Larmor has not paid an earlier subscription. It had quite escaped Thompson that Larmor had contributed to the translation [of De Magnete, by William Gilbert]. He intended to add Sampson's name to the list of workers, but omitted it as a vexing oversight on his part. He almost cancelled the circulars, and had forgotten about Larmor's early contribution. Thompson does not think that either would recognise any passage as theirs, as it has been cut about and revised. He rewrote all of books I, II and V in a first revision and these were cut about in the second. Sampson's translation was much freer than the others and workers erred in the side of being literal. Sampson has not paid his guineas and neither has J.C. [John Couch] Adams and he has no Cambridge counterfoils. He asks if Larmor has ascertained whether Gilbert signed rolls in Cambridge. |
