TitleLetter from Silvanus P [Phillips] Thompson, Morland, Chislett Road, West Hampstead, to Sir Joseph Larmor
CreatorThompson; Silvanus Phillips (1851-1916); physicist and electrical engineer
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date14 November 1910
DescriptionHe thanks Larmor for taking trouble with his acoustic problem. Thompson is quite ignorant of hydrodynamics, but Larmor's postcard does not dispose of the puzzle. He wants to know a form of tube opening which will not reflect the sound wave at all. He thinks he is right to say that the trumpet ended tube does reflect the sound, illustrating this with a small sketch. He explains his understanding of the shape of tube and high harmonics. He restates his problem with close and open ended tubes and sound reflection.
