| Title | Letter from Silvanus P [Phillips] Thompson, Morland, Chislett Road, West Hampstead, to Sir Joseph Larmor |
| Creator | Thompson; Silvanus Phillips (1851-1916); physicist and electrical engineer |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 30 September 1914 |
| Description | He predicts a crisis in the affairs of the Royal Society Catalogue [of Scientific Papers] particularly if the International Catalogue is compelled to suspend operations. The Royal Society has lent £7,000 to the International Catalogue and may have to find £3,000 more to complete the work up to 1913. The matter is complicated by the agreement with Cambridge University Press and he wishes to have Larmor's opinion. Thompson's outlines the current publishing situation, including the number of sheets being processed each week. At present rates, the project would complete in 1917 or 1918. If they are compelled to cease printing operations due to financial considerations, he wonders how things would stand with the Press. There should be a meeting of the Catalogue Committee soon. Thompson thinks they should accelerate as slow progress adds to costs. He asks Larmor if the views of the Syndics might be sounded out. |
