| Title | Letter from [William Thomson, Lord] Kelvin, 15 Eaton Place, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Thomson; William; Baron Kelvin (1824-1907); British mathematician and physicist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 11 April 1902 |
| Description | Sir John Ardagh's duty, since his proposal for the Royal Society, has been to act as representative to the British Government on adjudication of foreign governments' claims for compensation as a result of the South African war. He has settled claims which could be dealt with in England and is now in South Africa to complete the work and Kelvin believes he has done well. The Royal Society should welcome distinguished men who have worked for public service, especially if that work has scientific character, as much of Ardagh's has been. Larmor will recall his help in the projected measurement of meridian from the Cape to Cairo. He asks Larmor to call Council's attention to this. |
