| Title | Letter from W N [William Napier] Shaw, Meteorological Office, 63 Victoria Street, London, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Shaw; Sir William Napier (1854-1945); British meteorologist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 20 November 1908 |
| Description | He thinks that Larmor's suggestion on Gold's paper ['The isothermal layer of the atmosphere and atmospheric radiation' by Ernest Gold] meets the difficulty, and it would save correspondence if he might raise this with Gold himself, as they are both in Cambridge. Shaw feels it is important that the paper should be published in a comprehensible form for those interested in the subject. The isothermic layer of the atmoshere has not been referred to before in a Royal Society paper, so that some introduction is necessary. The numerical result of the calculations is of vital importance. He thinks the mathematics should be in such a form as would not require high distinction in practice to understand. He comments on alternative journals, but agrees with Larmor that the proper approach is to make the paper acceptable for Royal Society publication. He will write to Gold to ask him to communicate with Larmor. |
