| Title | Letter from W N [William Napier] Shaw, 10 Moreton Gardens, Old Brompton Road, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Shaw; Sir William Napier (1854-1945); British meteorologist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 6 April 1914 |
| Description | He gives references to sources for global monthly isobars, and notes that the [Meteorological Office] gives the distribution for six months in the 'Barometer manual for the use of seamen'. He cannot say whether the pressures are corrected for gravity, but probably not, since that is a modern innovation on charts. He does not know of any data on temperature distributions above observatory domes. The weekly report has temperatures at 4 feet and at just above ground level. The variation of temperature at night in consequence of radiation has been treated mathematically, and he gives a reference, together with a graph for a height-temperature curve. |
