TitleLetter from Arthur Smithells, Ballantrae, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorSmithells; Arthur (1860-1939); British chemist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date3 October 1905
DescriptionIf Larmor looks at Smithells' papers, he will find very little reference to [George Gabriel] Stokes except a general obligation. Letters worth printing would be those in which he deals with the general phenomenon of luminosity in gases and some others with general points, including one in which he refers to a conversation with Faraday. Papers on the spectra of copper, gold and carbon are too full of minutiae. They contain misunderstandings in terms of old chemical notation and want of familiarity with later chemistry details. He writes merely to save Larmor the trouble of reading Smithells' old papers, not because he doubts Larmor's judgement in selection. Larmor will see that Stokes wrote from Cambridge and London on the same day, on board ship, and at all hours.
