TitleLetter from Fredk [Frederick] Soddy, the University, Glasgow, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorSoddy; Frederick (1877-1956); British chemist and social commentator
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date29 July 1906
DescriptionHe asks for Larmor's advice on the publication of researches from the past two years. The subject range is wide, both chemical and physical, but intimately connected so that it would save repetition if published together. The starting point is a new chemical method of producing the highest vacuum, developing into applications, ideas about high vacuum and its measurement, detection of minimal quantities of argon and helium, and the nature of alpha particle charge. He wishes to submit to the Royal Society, but queries whether papers are sent out to referees before publication, and whether referees would be actively engaged in the same type of work. If Larmor is at the British Assoiation in York, they could meet rather than Larmor replying. He has not communicated a paper to the Royal Society, though two with Sir William Ramsay appeared in Proceedings, and he believes that all papers have to be submitted to referees in advance of publication.
