TitleLetter from G A [George Adolphus] Schott, Mintaro, North Road, Aberystwyth, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorSchott; George Adlphus (1868-1937); British mathematician
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date24 June 1918
DescriptionSchott thinks he has not made himself clear in his paper. In his, [George Walker] Walker attacked the work of [Hendrik] Lorentz, maintaining that his mass formulae required modification in the light of his own results. Schott wished to show that Lortentz's results followed correctly from his assumptions. All treat the charge on the electron as a continuous layer, rather than a discontinuous layer of sub-electrons, and all make the same assumption on the mean of the force on each side of the electric layer. Walker differs in assuming the inside force to vanish inside his 'conductor'. Schott and Lorentz make no such assumption, considering the usual electromagnetic equations for continuous volume distributions hold inside the electric layer and this agrees with the Relativity formula. Schott is not in favour of sub-electrons, as there would be no way to call a halt on such sub-divisions. Schott has been working on the reconciliation of classical electrodynamics with modern ideas, including [Niels] Bohr's atomic model and the quantum of angular momentum, and he is beginning to see some light. He would like to consult with Larmor on publication some time in the future.
