TitleLetter from T E [Thomas Edward] Thorpe, Whinfield, Salcombe, S Devon, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorThorpe; Sir Thomas Edward (1845-1925); British chemist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date8 February 1914
DescriptionHe is obliged for Larmor's letter stating that the University Press are willing to grant him £25 for transcribing the Cavendish papers. He has found a 'young lady' willing to try, with his help, to decipher [Henry] Cavendish's crabbed handwriting. He has finished sorting and arranging the manuscripts, which were in a muddle, so many people having handled them. There are some loose sheets he cannot place, but he can begin to see what material is likely to be useful. He is not competent to deal with some subjects, or to judge whether such materials are original, but some seem interesting. The universality of his knowledge 'is simply amazing'. He proposes submitting those papers which he cannot deal with to Larmor for his opinion, and perhaps invoking others to help.
