| Title | Letter from T E [Thomas Edward] Thorpe, Whinfield, Salcombe, S Devon, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Thorpe; Sir Thomas Edward (1845-1925); British chemist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 1 September 1918 |
| Description | He was pleased to learn that Cambridge University Press had decided to begin work on the Cavendish Memorial edition next October and he should receive one sheet per week of his sections of the volumes. He is glad that they have decided to reprint [James Clerk] Maxwell's work with modifications. They still hope to have Larmor to stay at Salcombe. The Tildens are currently with them, but leaving tomorrow. [William Augustus] Tilden cannot get about much, but he enjoys the sight of the sea, and with naval craft there is always something on view. He notes how distressing Bertram Hopkinson's death was, wondering if a man in his position should have risked his life in that way. 'There seems to be absolutely no sense of economy in human material in this war'. All of the Hopkinson family, with one excception, have met with violent deaths. |
