TitleLetter from A P [Alexander Pelham] Trotter, the Athenaeum, to Sir Joseph Larmor
CreatorTrotter; Alexander Pelham (1857-1947); British electrical engineer
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date20 December 1909
DescriptionAs Larmor suggested, the paper is one which Lord Rayleigh upset, but only on a small point rather than the treatment of results, which Trotter considers 'an amazing blunder'. He quotes from p.206 of Wright's paper, on intensities of illumination. The results would be of interest to Trotter if he could understand them, or the rest of the paper. He hesitates to condemn the whole paper, as it was done under the supervision of [Eugen von] Lommel, [Hugo von] Seeliger and [Leo] Graetz who would not have let Walker fall into error. He wonders if their grasp of English might have been a factor. Trotter has been investigating the reflection of light from white or rought surfaces, and dispersal of light by translucent or opalescent substances. He gives references to previous research and provides some of the curves which he has obtained. The work progresses slowly, but he outlines the experiments he means to try.
