TitleLetter from Fred T [Frederick Thomas] Trouton, Physical Laboratory, Trinity College, Dublin, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorTrouton; Frederick Thomas (1863-1922); Irish experimental physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date3 October 1901
DescriptionHe fears he did not make things clear to Larmor in his previous letter. [George Francis] Fitzgerald's idea was that a charged condenser required more energy moving edgeways than flatways, because of the magnetic field established between two plates. He expands upon this, the question being where extra energy is supplied from. Fitzgerald suggested that force might be exerted by the condenser at the moment of changing in the opposite direction to movement through the aether. Trouton gives calculations and a sketched diagram, and relates more about his experiment, noting how the sensitiveness of the apparatus was measured, using a small magnet on the pendulum, and the result.
