TitleLetter from Fred T [Frederick Thomas] Trouton, Caerleon, Killiney, Co Dublin, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorTrouton; Frederick Thomas (1863-1922); Irish experimental physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date23 October 1901
DescriptionWith reference to the suggestion that the source of energy for producing the magnetic field between the plates in a moving condenser is to be found in the direction of the charging e.m.f. [electro-magnetic field] there is no difficulty in there being enough energy around for the purpose. He gives an example, but states that this cannot be the source, and he discusses the energy source according to [George Francis] Fitzgerald's suggestion. In one example Trouton gives, the energy for the magnetic field would be supplied from the cell when it charged the condenser in the edge-wise position. He concludes by saying that the last time he saw Fitzgerald, he told him that the preliminary experiments were pointing towards a negative result, and Fitzgerald said that if this was correct, it could be explained by the same suggestion he had made about the Michelson-Morley experiment.
