| Title | Letter from Fred T [Frederick Thomas] Trouton, Physical Laboratory, Trinity College, Dublin, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Trouton; Frederick Thomas (1863-1922); Irish experimental physicist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 11 November 1901 |
| Description | He thanks Larmor for his letters. He would not adopt an intermittent charging method if he was looking for a contant torque effect, but it was necessary in looking for the Fitzgerald effect. The torque would be better observed with as light an arrangement as possible under a constant charge, by observing steady deflection by means of a spot of light. The charge might be at very high potential. The arrangement in looking for the Fitzgerald effect would give no evidence of turning as the plates had to remain horizontal. They should be hung vertically to test the turning effect. He notes the reason for using a long arm in his experiments. He is pleased that Larmor believes this sufficiently interesting to carry on with. He thinks the interesting question is the energy put in when the apparatus is carrying a known amount. He discusses energy and application of torque for the apparatus swing; he states that he has been trying to devise a continuous rotating arrangement, giving a sketched diagram and describing what he had in mind. |
