TitleLetter from H H [Herbert Hall] Turner, University Observatory, Oxford, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorTurner; Herbert Hall (1861-1930); British astronomer and seismologist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date24 April 1906
DescriptionTurner thinks that Larmor has not quite understood his letter. The Royal Astronomical Society was aware that the arrangement [to receive astronomical papers published by the Royal Society?] could be terminated by the Royal Society at any time. However as the originator of the plan, and hoping for an expansion, Turner is in an odd position. He considered the scheme a failure as no other societies cared, and the Royal Astronomical Society Secretaries complained that they 'were paying a good deal for [Joseph Norman] Lockyer's intolerable rubbish'. Turner was prepared to abandon the plan when the letter from the Royal Society arrived stating that the scheme was to be abandoned because other societies wished to join it. He therefore wrote to the Royal Society's President. He thinks that Larmor's objection is in expense to the Royal Society, although he thinks this difficulty should not exist, if the societies would contribute. Offering them numbers of the Proceedings is not the same and he asks if they might discuss the matter.
