TitleLetter from J [Joseph] Larmor, St John's College, Cambridge, to M. [Aimé Auguste] Cotton
CreatorLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
RecipientCotton; Aimé Auguste (1869-1951); French physicist
Date9 January 1911
DescriptionLarmor has been looking at Cotton's 'beautiful memoir' on accidental double refraction, and makes remarks upon it in English. He considers the question of the strong double refraction of crystals to be open. He suggests that careful calculation might resolve this, recommending [Thomas Henry] Havelock as a person to carry it through. Larmor remarks on Cotton's extension to cases of liquids, and wishes he could find time to resume his own interest in the subject. He thinks it is clear that Cotton is 'going to make it effective for new knowledge in various directions'.

With some pencilled calculations by Larmor.
