| Description | [John] Purser showed Fitzgerald a letter from his brother, referring to Larmor. Frederick Purser was senior to George [Francis Fitzgerald] in College and did not know him intimately. Maurice Fitzgerald was in the same mathematics class as Frederick Purser. Maurice describes his education with his brother George, whose mathematical ability came from the Stoney side of the family. Their early tutors were not particularly good, but at Trinity College Dublin they had the barrister John Murray as a coach, whom Maurice thinks is still alive. George was good at physical sciences observation but hjad no ability in classics or literature; he was a poor musician but had some talent in colour and aesthetic effects. His ambition to be a master of physical sciences began early. He was a good hurley player and won prizes for vaulting in the gymnasium; in later life he played tennis, golf, and bicycled. George was a member of the Shakespeare Club in College, which included [William?] Ridgeway and perhaps Bram Stoker. |
