TitleLetter from Arch [Archibald] Geikie, the Royal Society, Burlington House, London, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorGeikie; Sir Archibald (1835-1924); British geologist and historian
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date6 August 1908
DescriptionHe received Larmor's telegram and opened [Arthur] Balfour's letter accordingly. He thinks it a good letter but Geikie quotes regulation 34 of the Government Grant rules, which statres that the Royal Society cannot refuse to contribute from the Reserve Fund towards matters referred by the Government. At the time that this regulation was inserted, it was never contemplated that this should refer to anything other than office expenses and printing, and not to scientific enquiry. Geikie has corresponded with the Treasure on the matter and encloses the type of letter which might be sent to the Home Ofice, if Larmor approves. He notes other steps to take, including sending the typed letter to Larmor for signature and despatch.
