| Title | Letter from Geo Fras [George Francis] Fitzgerald, St Lawrence Lodge, Sutton, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | FitzGerald; George Francis (1851-1901); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 19 July 1894 |
| Description | Their letters crossed. Fitzgerald states that the effects Larmor is calculating ar much too large, not taking into account the inertia is only effective, and diminished when ions are near one another. By making the ions infinitesimal and at infinitesimal distances, he only gets finite inertia 'of the ordinary kind'. He has added pencil notes to the manuscript and thinks he misunderstood Larmor's view of the Hall effect. [George] Johnstone Stoney has been with him and will send his double line papers to Larmor. 'Stoney was rather horrified at calling these ionic charges "ions". He or somebody has called them "electrons" and the ion is the atom, not the electric charge'. |
