| Title | Letter from E H [Edmond Herbert] Hills, Grayswood, Haslemere, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Hills; Edmond Herbert Grove- [pseud. Colonel Rivers] (1864-1922); British astronomer |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 19 November 1906 |
| Description | He encloses a tracing of the torque diagram for 1900-05. He cannot understand how Larmor can justify selecting a new origin for the final diagram as it will render the final curve meaningless, since the longitude at points on the curve will be different from the plotted positions. He notes his objection to plotting time and time longitudes along the curve, giving his reasoning. The origin of the revolving torque diagram must be at the centre of the curve, as the motion of the Earth's axis is equally probable in all directions. If they followed Turner's suggestion they would get a different set of curves, but they would be consistent. He thinks Larmor's suggested final curve would be soemthing quite different, since every point would give a different apparent position for the meridian. |
