| Description | The Government of India has enquired whether it would be possible to find a replacement for [Sir John] Eliot, a man of 'the highest scientific attainments with an established European reputation'. He would not be expected to exercise more than general control of the astronomical observatory, but take thorough control of the solar physics and magnetic observatories. Other necessary attributes are set out, with a salary at around £1,200-£1,600 per annum. If a candidate cannot be found, an officer of the Indian Educational Department might be appointed. |
