| Title | Letter from George E [Ellery] Hale, Carnegie Institution of Washington, Mount Wilson Solar Observatory, Pasadena, California, to Sir Joseph Larmor, St. John's College, Cambridge, England |
| Creator | Hall; George Ellery (1868-1938); American astronomer and solar physicist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 21 December 1921 |
| Description | He owes Larmor a letter and thanks him for the small Maxwell volume. Hale congratulates Larmor on the Copley Medal award and hopes this will offset any disappointment he has about the Irish settlement, which leaves Ulster in an uncertain position. Professor Dayton Miller has just repeated the Michelson-Morley experiment on Mount Wilson, with negative results. Miller and Morley confirmed the original work in the basement of the Case School and continued in Cleveland, finding a small effect of uncertain origin. Repeating at Mount Wilson he initially found large fringe displacements, but these were proved to be of instrument origin and almost wholly eliminated. The residual 180 degree effect is a small fraction of the fringe, so small that the negative result is confirmed. Hale details how the physics community at Mount Wilson has been strengthened, and he hopes to see Larmor on his way to the International Research Council meeting next year |
