| Title | Letter from George E [Ellery] Hale, to [Joseph] Larmor |
| Creator | Hall; George Ellery (1868-1938); American astronomer and solar physicist |
| Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
| Date | 23 December 1922 |
| Description | He thanks Larmor for his letter and the suggestion on the bands of CO. He has not been able to look up [Arthur] Schuster's original Philosophical Transactions paper but recalls that the gas lines were straight on the moving plate and those with measurable curvatures were due to the metals of the poles. He does not think the lines could be observed with CO, but it would be interesting to try. He would be glad to have Larmor's opinion if he has access to Schuster's paper. Hale's head is still weak and gives out when he tries to think, and he has steered clear of Paris where there are too many interesting things. He trusts that all is well with Larmor and his women constituents, commenting that he is pleased that [David] Lloyd George has gone and Bonar Law should make a good Premier. He discusses the reversal of polarity of sunspots at the last mimimum, which led them to check instruments for error, and examine photographs of spot spectra. [Ferdinand] Ellerman has observed the first spot of the new cycle, and its polarity was the reverse of the present cycle. Hale is waiting for more observations and he sketches spots from 1912 and 1922, discussing the possible polarities in high and low latitudes. He concludes that the spots originate within the Sun, and are not caused by falling meteors. He thinks that Larmor should work on the hydrodynamical problems suggested, which must 'involve the internal peculiarities of all the stars in heaven!' |
