TitleLetter from George E [Ellery] Hale, SS Arabia, Luxor, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorHall; George Ellery (1868-1938); American astronomer and solar physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date11 January 1923
DescriptionLarmor's letter was welcome and Hale has sent it to Adams, recommending that a determination of deflection should be included in the eclipse programme. Campbell got good photographs in Australia, but Larmor's conclusions will mean more discussion and another measurement will be desirable. He congratulates Larmor on his results, stating that he 'shall be delighted if you succeed in knocking Einstein into a cocked hat'. He is curious to know what [Hendrik Antoon] Lorentz will say. If Larmor has a chance to think about the suggestion of a modification of [Arthur] Schuster's experiment, Hale would be grateful. Hale's trip up the Nile has been pleasant, and he relates travel plans, but thinks there may be war clouds in Turkey.
