| Description | Huggins asks if Larmor is free to meet him the Athaeneum for lunch on Thursday. He then thanks Larmor for his help in 'putting off Sec'. He is glad to know [Ernest] Rutherford's opinion on [William] Ramsay's speculations, which he notes are nearing the views of [William Thomson, Lord] Kelvin. He considers Ramsay's helium, and whether or not he regards radium as a compound containing helium. He reports that his wife [Lady Margaret Huggins] has heard from [Arthur] Schuster's family who are enjoying themselves in Ceylon. He suspects that Ramsay would have been chosen for Winnipeg. He states that J J [Joseph John] Thomson's immediate competitors were Ramsay, [Oliver Joseph] Lodge, and the Duke of Argyll. He thinks Ramsay or Lodge would have been a more popular President in Canada. He discusses [James Thomson] Bottomley and Lord Kelvin. He comments that Dr Henry is to get married next Tuesday, and as they do not have much money he supposes 'the Sisyphian life-task of making both ends meet must begin'. He states that the death of [William Edward] Wilson was unexpected, as his wife had not told [Margaret Huggins] that he was ill. |
