| Description | Huggins appreciates Larmor's kind words about the Royal Society instruments. Huggins believes that it was a clause in the deed drawn up by [George Gabriel] Stokes that they were to remain in Huggins's possession as long as they are in constant use, but notes that he can discuss this with Larmor when they meet. His offer to Newall was only prelimary and does not commit him to anything. Huggins discusses a suitable day to meet. He is sure that Larmor's obituary of Kelvin 'will have a very high value, wholly apart from Kelvin, as a contribution to the history of the development of modern physical science'. He quotes a letter received last night from [George Ellery] Hale, regarding the structure of the plates and the direction of the whirls depending on the hemisphere. Hale notes that the photographs are 'so complex that they need prolonged study'. Hale also updates him on his new experiments on the new calcium lines with his electric furnace. |
