TitleLetter from William Huggins, 90 Upper Tulse Hill, S W [South West] London, to the Secretary [Joseph Larmor]
CreatorHuggins; Sir William (1824-1910); British astronomer
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date1 April 1910
DescriptionHe hopes that [Philip Herbert] Cowell will be chosen for Greenwich [Observatory]. He hopes Larmor will go to Mt Wilson where he will find it 'a birthplace - a very Bethlehem of progress and promise'. [Percival] Lowell has gone to Paris to lecture, which Huggins mentions in relation to [George Johnstone] Stoney. He then discusses the affair between [Andrew Russell] Forsyth and [Marion Amelia Pollock] Boys, including the news that that Boys's mother 'is writing to some of her friends to ask them to receive her daughter as Mrs Forsyth! When, to those who have eyes to see, is emblazened upon here, in large, the "scarlet letter"'. He finds [Henri Alexandre] Deslandres 'a nuisance' for his writing against [George Ellery] Hale. He is sorry to hear about Mr Newall. [David] Gill has written to Dreyer regarding the catalogues in [William] Herschel's Papers, but Huggins feels that 'the reprint should give the papers as they came from Herschel's pen.
