Title | Letter from Horace Lamb, The University, Manchester, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Lamb; Sir Horace (1849-1934); British mathematician |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 5 March 1919 |
Description | He sent Larmor's letter to [Augustus Edward Hough] Love. On looking over the suggestions, they agreed that two topics met with no objections: tides and diffraction. Love chose diffraction and Lamb sent him a draft proclamation accordingly, which he will alter. This will be sent for Larmor's criticism. Lamb should have been clear that he did not object to setting bait for a particular man, but under present conditions thought it might operate unfairly. Larmor's letter has not altogther removed Lamb's personal objections. Diffraction has in its favour that it is mathematically definite, although difficult. It is proposed to rule out furrher work on the sphere or cylinder. |
