TitleLetter from A [Alexander] Larmor, Ducie Hotel, Oxford Street, Manchester, to Joseph [Larmor]
CreatorLarmor; Alexander (d.1936); Irish mathematician and science educator
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date13 October 1886
DescriptionAlexander thanks Joseph for a reminder about the Intermediate Examinership; he has sent in an application which he has copied on the last page [present]. He has been looking around for lodgings and if his old landlady does not accept his offer of £1 per week, he will take rooms in the house used by Dr. Basil, ten minutes from College. [Arthur] Schuster arrived on Sunday and has suggested a magnetic experiment. In the magnetic dip, a long needle gives a greater value than a short one, something which [George Biddell] Airy could not explain. Schuster wants Alexander to rig Joule's suspension and try an experiment, thinking that it may be due to induction of the long needle on the Earth. Alexander thinks he has a 'curious theorem' from the polar fugure in H. [Homersham?] Cox's paper.

With a copy letter, dated 12 October, submitting his name for the post of Examiner to the Board of Intermediate Education in Ireland, for listed subjects.
