DescriptionHe encloses two cheques for £250 and £300 which he asks Joseph to invest for him. He is kept hard at work with 114 boys, 28 of whom are boarders. Smyth took the first mathematical scholarship at Belfast. There is an old boy at Trinity who is first senior moderator in classics and in modern literature, with a gold medal in each. Alexander notes a visit from the Deputy Governor of the Irish Society who said that nothing would get in the way of the amalgamation scheme. Dr. Hime is fighting against it. The mass of public opinion is in favour. The act of Parliament is drafted and will be at the Commons in December. Willie [William Wright Larmor] is getting on well and has joined the Galway gymnasium.
