Title | Letter from Alex [Alexander] Larmor, Foyle College, Londonderry, to 'Willie' [William Wright Larmor] |
Creator | Larmor; Alexander (d.1936); Irish mathematician and science educator |
Recipient | Larmor; William Wright (1869-1936); Irish surveyor |
Date | 6 June 1897 |
Description | He thinks that William should reflect before committing himself to the Uganda project. There could only be two inducements to enter into it; he notes these, discusses duties, and thinks there would be little to improve William's prospects. A salary of £400 would be poor justification 'for renouncing all civilisation'. He thinks that William should stick to his plan, reading to take an engineering qualification and attending college. This would enable him to seek a surveyorship or at least a moderate salary. Alexander would subsidise him for the purpose and the family has the same opinion. Alexander has accepted the Governors' terms but has not formed any plans apart from enquiring about a vacancy at Bath College. |
