TitleLetter from Alex [Alexander] Larmor, 28 Clarendon Street, Londonderry, to Joseph [Larmor]
CreatorLarmor; Alexander (d.1936); Irish mathematician and science educator
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date9 November 1909
DescriptionHe thanks Joseph for the catalogue, saying that he will draw McMaster's attention to it to buy for the Library. He thinks Joseph was right to resign from the Belfast Senatorship, 'not a very desirable body to be connected with'. Alexander has 32 freshmen and next year's intake may be larger, but they cannot increase staff until the McCrea bequest comes in. He gives an outline of staffing, and notes the achievements of some of his former students. The university fund, enabling Magee College students to get the Dublin degree without exceeding the Belfast degree, is doing well. Public subscriptions have raised £3,671 and the Irish Society have made a grant of £100 per annum. He notes the arrival of the new theology professor, Reverend David Smith, a Glasgow graduate who has written several books. Alecander is in arrears with learned society subscriptions and encloses a cheque.
