TitleLetter from G H [George Henry] Livens, 91 Crookes Road, Sheffield, to [Joseph] Larmor, St. John's College, Cambridge
CreatorLivens; George Henry (1886-1950); British mathematician
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date6 February 1911
DescriptionHe is sending a paper on the initial accelerated motion of electrified systems. He has remodelled work done by [George Walker] Walker in his Philosophical Transaction paper, avoiding the complications caused by the introduction of the effective force in the system moving with uniforn acceleration. He has concluded that the electromagnetic mass of any system at rest or in uniform motion is zero. He expands upon his thinking on the acceleration of a sphere and the aether, noting the work of Lorentz and others for electromagnetic masses. He notes his original intention in writing the papers, with certain results having been missed by Walker. If he thinks the paper worth publishing he would like Larmor's advice on where to send it.
