Title | Letter from O J L [Oliver Joseph Lodge], 2 Grove Park, Liverpool, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Lodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 7 November 1893 |
Description | Lodge thinks that Larmor should not do any other work but stick to his theory. It is a pity to be 'choked off' real work by everyday trivialities. His potential function must be acyclic but he did not think a potential could be allowed to be many-valued. He explains this via many-valued magnetic potentials in magnetic fields, but [James Clerk] Maxwell always seemed to use 'a potential' and Lodge thought this was the custom. All of his experiments are looking for motion in closed contours, mechanical and magnetic. All such motion may produce an effect, he thinks, but not any motion set up by a moving Earth. He notes an objection in a sketch [of the Earth's magnetic field and motion?]. He asks for a reference to further reading, 'not too stiff'. |
