TitleLetter from O J L [Oliver Joseph Lodge], 2 Grove Park, Liverpool, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorLodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date25 May 1894
DescriptionHe is glad to hear from Larmor, and asks if he has a demonstration at the Royal Institution. Lodge's whirling disk proves that matter, whether plain, magnetised or electrified, has no grip on the aether. He expands upon this, his next idea being to use spokes, but if Larmor thinks ribs on a plate would be better there would be no difficulty. He asks if the idea of ribs was as a further test of viscosity, thinking that the question had been settled; he was to use spokes to look for possible many valued irrotional motion. No single value can be detected. He gathers that setting up such motion would be impossible except in the presence of viscosity. He asks if Larmor would like him to push the magetic flow test to a further limit of smallness, or if there is some loophole. Lodge has been busy on electrical radiation, not thinking about the aether machine until he has more development time. He notes other possible approaches and wonders what direction he should persevere in.
