Title | Letter from O J L [Oliver Joseph Lodge], 2 Grove Park, Liverpool, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Lodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 14 October 1897 |
Description | He believes he is right in saying that a sharp spectrum line when magnetised and examined through a nicol [prism] looks sharply doubled, each line the same breadth as the original and perfectly plane polarized. Without the nicol he has not looked much, because it was fuzzy, but he thinks that is how [Pieter] Zeeman got the tripling. He thinks that the central line 'ought to be some circular'. He has not seen the tripling of a single narrow line, but of the broader reversed line. The appearance is the same whether spark or flame is used. He discusses Larmor's theorem and concludes by saying that if Larmor wants the lines examined more minutely for measured details to verify his theory, he should let Lodge know. |
