Title | Letter from J [John] Joly, Somerset, Temple Road, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Joly; John (1857-1933); Irish geologist and physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 8 November 1910 |
Description | It was good of Larmor to write about the Philosophical Magazine at such length. It happens that trivial works can sometimes get through due to weighty outside influence. Such cases are not easy to deal with without giving offence. A committee would likely tire of its duties. A competent editor based in London would be the best option. Joly claims to have no voice in general policy but he advised on steps to strengthen the editorship after Kelvin's death. He has taken advice when a paper was beyond his 'limited capacities', and he could refer to his cousin Charlie Joly when he was alive. He notes other advisors, including Whittaker and Young, but most papers go in on the strength of the author's reputation. The medal was a surprise and he thanks Larmor for telling him about it. |
