Title | Letter from Oliver [Joseph] Lodge, Mariemont, Edgbaston, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Lodge; Sir Oliver Joseph (1851-1940); British physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 19 December 1904 |
Description | He asks Larmor to make such arrangements with Royal Society Publishing as would give the Secretary some peace. Macmillan's would be calm and efficient. Lodge thanks Larmor for Gibbs's pamphlet, which he has meant to read but has not yet. It irritates Lodge to see [James] Swinburne 'cracked up' by soemone who ought to know better. His recent address to the Students of the Electrical Engineers was 'illiterate and unwholesome'. It would only irritate Larmor and therefore Lodge will not send a copy, but he is considering resigning from the Institution of Electrical Engineers unless they repudiate it. 'Scientific errors are trivial, but bunkum of the lowest class of worldly wisdom and blasphemy against all the ideals of scientific men ought to be dealt with more strongly'. He hopes that Larmor will manage a complete holiday and not worry about Royal Society matters. He asks Larmor to spare himself from overwork. |
