Title | Letter from J [John] Joly, Somerset House, Temple Road, Dublin, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Joly; John (1857-1933); Irish geologist and physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 16 March 1914 |
Description | Joly has asked the Board of T.C.D. [Trinity College, Dublin] to have a Fitzgerald Medal struck in accordance with the resolution of the Trustess of the Fund. It has been in the University calendar for twelve years without anything being done. The Board has consented and it remains to determine the design. He thinks that a portrait should appear on one side, but asks what might be on the reverse. Something to commemorate the fundamental nature of his work would be desirable. Joly wonders if there are any equations in his 1883 paper that might be appropriate and discusses other possibilities. His work was mainly on the aether and this does not lend itself to illustration. He asks for Larmor's help. |
