Title | Letter from J [John] Joly, Somerset House, Temple Road, Dublin, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Joly; John (1857-1933); Irish geologist and physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 22 July 1916 |
Description | He thanks Larmor for his valuable letter. Argument is useless with certain members of the Board on the subject of natural science. He hopes to be able to elect to Fellowships without examinations. Having men who will do something will be a great improvement. He notes that he once read for the master mariner's certificate before his accession to the chair of geology. He offered himself and his motor boat to the Admiralty and they would take the boat but not its owner. His first attempt at the nautical life was at the age of thirteen and now he can only work at signalling, but he thinks he might bring out a short book on the subject. |
