Title | Letter from J [John] Joly, Somerset House, Temple Road, Dublin, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Joly; John (1857-1933); Irish geologist and physicist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 5 April 1927 |
Description | Joly thinks it remarkable that the polar regions should have the highest continent. He compares the average height of Antarctica with Asia and considers how Antarctica might extend downwards. He theorises about substratum fluidity and movement caused by tidal effects. A deep continent would be a source of drag, and he considers the effects of this, 'I picture a sort of spiral movement of the outer crust...' |
