Title | Letter from P [Peter] Chalmers Mitchell, Zoological Society of London, 3 Hanover Square, London, to J [Joseph] Larmor, the Royal Society, Burlington House |
Creator | Mitchell; Sir Peter Chalmers (1864-1945); British zoologist |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 22 December 1904 |
Description | He replied to Larmor's letter of 13 December first, waiting to discuss matters with Professor [Henry Edward] Armstrong and a Council meeting. He encloses a letter to Armstrong which explains how matters stand. [Philip Lutley] Sclater and [Joseph Jackson] Lister who attacked the International Catalogue vigorously were members of Larmor's committee, not his. In summary, zoologists are accustomed to the form of the 'Record', making the zoology in the International Catalogue less necessary. The Record is a financial drain, but the zoologists would prefer to spend on improving that, rather than on the Catalogue, when they are unsure of its stability. Many recognise the advantages of an international system, however. A satisfactory solution may be arrived at during the International Congress next July. If so, it is probable that the Zoological Society would be able to help with the slips for the International Catalogue until a joint production appears. He hopes that an arrangement may be made. |
