Title | Letter from H F [Hugh Frank] Newall, Madingley Rise, Cambridge, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Newall; Hugh Frank (1857-1944) British astrophysicist and educational benefactor |
Recipient | Larmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist |
Date | 13 January 1907 |
Description | Larmor's good wishes are welcome. Newall is delighted to hear of Larmor's interest in scintillations: 'the bands on O.G. are effectively holes'. He describes [Lorenzo] Respighi's observations, which were utilised by Rayleigh. Because of his instruments, he got momentary cesassions of light, and his moving spectrum bands meant that different wavelengths were cut out at different moment in a systematic way, due to the Earth's rotation. Newall has not checked Rayleigh's observations of the movement of bands, and has doubts if they are correct. With the 25-inch instrument, bands with 8 inches and 1 1/2 inches can be observed, with some complications. He gives his impression of Rayleigh's paper on the subject, saying he must refresh his memory about it, and proposing what he considered was Rayleigh's explanation for dispersal of light by inequalities produced at a definite distance. He refers to pages in enclosed papers [not present]. |
