| Description | He has recently discovered in the library four volumes of manuscript of rough work by [Colin] Maclaurin, with letters from correspondents and some of his replies. Two volumes contain manuscripts from which his works were prepared. The other two contain some variety: correspondence with French mathematicians, including [Alexis Claude] Clairaut and letters on the Newton-Leibniz controversy. Macdonald believes that most of these are unknown and asks Larmor if he thinks they would be of sufficient interest to have a selection printed. Money would be forthcoming, but many of the letters are not well preserved and are difficult to read. Given the time involved, he wonders if it would be worth the effort. |
