TitleLetter from H M [Hector Munro] Macdonald, 52 College Bounds, Aberdeen, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorMacdonald; Hector Munro (1865-1935); British mathematician
RecipientLarmor; Sir Joseph (1857-1942); Irish theoretical physicist
Date22 March 1910
DescriptionHe thinks he told Larmor last Thursday that Martin Folkes was one of [Colin] Maclaurin's literary executors, and he and his executors were responsible for the work on Newton published after his death. Macdonald would like to know what became of the literary remains after this publication, suspecting that the material in the Aberdeen library came through [Andrew] Mitchell, another executor who was then M.P. for Aberdeen. He wonders if there is information in the [Royal Society] archives, as there was constant correspondence between Maclaurin and Folkes during the latter's Presidency. Maclaurin was in the habit of reading letters from other mathematicians to another society in Edinburgh and giving accounts of his own works. Two of these were published around 1771, which have been omitted from any list of his works. Macdonald intends to 'stir up' [George] Chrystal on the matter, as the Royal Society of Edinburgh was descended from the society established by Maclaurin and [Alexander] Monro. He has mislaid his card and asks for the date of the next Council meeting.
